If you are from out of town, as we call it, one of the most popular questions asked, before shortlisting a few properties to rent, and one that is included in our FAQs, is, “Where is the Sheffield City Centre?”
The marker for the Sheffield city centre is the Town Hall, I know you’re thinking, but Sheffield is a city, not a Town, but as a City we have one of those as well, approximately 250 yards away. The city hall is operated by Sheffield International Venues, and is one of many places to visit in Sheffield, to attend a concert, for a night at the theatre or to watch the world championship snooker at the infamous Crucible, where it will remain until at least 2045.
Sheffield city centre goes beyond the Town Hall. If you stick a pin at the foot of the steps and come out for around 0.75 of a mile, you are still very much in the heart of the city. If you work or study in Sheffield, especially as Hallam University has relocated from Broomgrove, there are plenty of apartments, flats and studios to rent, many of which, due to their central location, are more expensive than renting in areas like Hillsborough or Heeley, but you can get everywhere on foot.
The heart of the city also takes in the Peace Gardens, an award-winning public space running along Pinstone Street, close to the Winter Garden and within walking distance of the Millennium Galleries. All this is over and above the great choice of shops, from both chains and private operators, areas like Fargate, The Moor, Orchard Square and the cultural home of artisans, Leah’s Yard
It goes without saying that Sheffield’s music scene is nothing short of iconic, where acts like The Human League, ABC, Def Leppard and The Arctic Monkeys were born, with many of the original band members still living and loving Sheffield. As a lad brought up in Ranmoor, visiting town every Saturday, and today, where I visit nearly every day, I have witnessed the regeneration of Sheffield city centre over the decades.
I recall the days, as a young boy, with friends, catching the 52 bus from Crosspool into Sheffield city centre, where, upon arrival, there was the obligatory visit to Redgates, on Matilda Way, a Sheffield legend, then on Wimpy for a burger & chips, just before crossing Pinstone Street into Sugg Sports, browsing the latest Nike Tailwinds. The day was never done until I ventured back across Pinstone Street up to Cole Brothers, passing the infamous window of Fattorini jewellers on route.
Sadly, none of the above exists anymore, and a lot has changed since hearing the comedic tones of Tony Capstick on BBC Radio Sheffield. The city centre has dramatically transformed, yet still retains that “Sheffield” vibe,
The energy in Sheffield is unique, there is no shortage of Yorkshire grit, with a boatload of personality, and there is rarely a day that goes by without hearing an old story or overhearing someone saying “It’ll be reyt“, “Where’s thy bin” or “Get the sen off“.
The city is certainly divided by sport and the game that was invented here, football. There is a loyal following for Sheffield Wednesday (The Owls) and Sheffield United (The Blades), many Sheffield-born actors, celebrities and musicians can be spotted in the stands at Bramall Lane or Hillsborough, actor Sean Bean, Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill and the Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott, to name a few.
Moving back to Sheffield city centre, the industrial charm is still there, and the heart has many impressive historic buildings that are now complemented by today’s modern architecture. Sheffield has transformed and continues to do so; although it lost its way a decade ago, it’s now back with vengeance, where many out-of-town operators have recognised this new potential.
There has and continues to be an influx of some new bars, restaurants and retail therapists, names like Manchester’s Forbici at Millennium Square or Kapital on Wellington Street. Despite this, we still have the classics like VeroGusto, where you can wine & dine before going to the theatre.
