After your first year at Sheffield or Hallam University, you’ll need to choose new accommodations, and it’s a big decision. Let’s break down the two main options: purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and shared student housing.
PBSA
Purpose-built student accommodation has become a popular choice, and it’s often a great way to meet new people. While the weekly rent might seem higher at first, it usually includes additional onsite facilities and all your bills. These modern, purpose-built properties are typically equipped with the latest amenities.
Here’s what you can often find in the better PBSA:
- En-suite bedrooms and a variety of room styles
- High-speed internet and satellite TV
- On-site security, laundry services, and parking
- On-site movie room
- On-site gyms
- On-site games room(s) – pool, table tennis, table football, air hockey, etc
- Bills included in the rent
Shared Student Housing in Sheffield
This is the more traditional option, where you rent a house or flat with other students. When you choose shared housing, it’s crucial to understand your tenancy agreement.
The two most common types are:
- Joint Tenancy: Everyone signs one tenancy agreement and shares responsibility for the entire property. This means you are all “jointly and individually responsible” for the rent and any damages.
- Sole Tenancy: Each person has their separate tenancy agreement for their specific room, but you share facilities like the kitchen and living room.
Most landlords use an Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement, which is a fixed-term contract. Once you sign, you’re responsible for paying rent for the full period.
