Discover Your Perfect Neighbourhood in Sheffield

Sheffield is a city that truly has something for everyone, and it’s no surprise that so many students choose to stay here after they graduate. With a variety of vibrant neighbourhoods to explore, you’ll quickly find a place that feels like home. And though it’s a big city, getting around is easy—many places are a short walk away, and you can always hop on a bus or tram.

  • Broomhill & Crookes: Just a short walk from campus, these neighbourhoods are a huge hit with students, especially second and third years who are looking for a more independent lifestyle. Here you’ll find bustling high streets with everything from pharmacies and supermarkets to cute cafes, funky charity shops, and lively pubs.
  • Ecclesall Road & Sharrow Vale: A short walk from campus, Ecclesall Road is packed with cafes, restaurants, and independent shops. Tucked just behind it is Sharrow Vale Road, a local favorite with quirky pubs, indie shops, and cafes. As student Aminah explains, “Ecclesall Road is a place you can visit time after time and there’s always something different to do.” Be sure to check out Eve Kitchen for amazing fresh doughnuts and Pom Kitchen for delicious vegan food.
  • Devonshire Green & Division Street: This area has a distinct independent vibe, perfect if you’re looking for something a little different. Division Street is lined with vintage shops, cafes, and bars. At its heart is Devonshire Green, a popular spot for people to hang out and enjoy the sun. Some student favourites include Vulgar for vintage finds and Forum for all-day dining and late-night DJ’s.

Cool and Multicultural Hubs

  • Kelham Island: Voted one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods, Kelham Island is just a two-minute tram ride from campus. It’s a foodie paradise with places like Cutlery Works, the largest independent food hall in the north of England. The area is also home to microbreweries, indie shops, and art galleries.
  • London Road & Abbeydale Road: Located south of the city center, these multicultural neighborhoods are a 20-minute walk from campus and offer a fantastic mix of international restaurants and food shops. You can find everything from Chinese and Halal supermarkets to great dessert spots like Rassam’s Creamery.

On-Campus Living

  • Ranmoor/Endcliffe & City Residences: If you prefer to live right in a student community, Ranmoor/Endcliffe is Sheffield’s largest undergraduate residence area. It’s a safe, welcoming environment with on-site support, shops, and a bar. Sheffield University Residence Life mentors also organise over 1,000 activities each year to help you meet people and stay busy.
